Lack of resources and tools for young generation's acquaintance with the environment and their own land, as well as changing the lifestyle of today and the relationship between the child and the environment have caused the younger generation to be less familiar with the environmental concepts and cultural values of their land.

Establish a marine CCA to protect the Shark Fish in Qeshm Island​​​​​​​

Shark and Ray fish are very much in decline globally and close to 30 endangered species have been identified near the Qeshm Island. Considering that fisheries on the western part of the island is still very prominent, the project proposes to reduce unsustainable fishing that affects Shark and Ray fish, by establishing a CCA in about 300 square kilometers of water, which is an important nursery and feeding ground for Ray and Shark fish. In return, the local community could benefit from ecotourism and marketing of local handicrafts.​​​​​​​

Fishing is an important livelihood for the people of Qeshm Island, however women are usually not so involved in it. In Naghashe Village of Qeshm Island due to a difficult economic situation, women are taking a role in reviving a traditional fishing method (Moshta) as well as playing a role in the protection of the mangrove forest. This project focusses on production of local handicrafts to reduce the pressure on the forest.

One of the most important Oak habitats is Kuh-Siah (Kohkiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad Province) which is currently threatened (9500ha) by overharvest, overgrazing, fires, etc. In this project, endangered plant species will be protected with support from the local communities (Tamavolis) and one plant nursery will be established to enhance biodiversity and promote additional livelihoods. Also a CCA (4ha) will be established to protect the natural habitat of the Mountain Celery.

The Salehieh wetland (150ha) is near Qarpuzabad Village in Alborz Province. At present various communities are using its resources. Mangrove forest of Qeshm Island (6300ha) is the largest in the Persian Gulf and is both a Ramsar Site and a Biosphere Reserve. While this forest was traditionally managed by local communities, in the past decades it has been exposed to various threats such as overfishing, tourism and overharvest. This project aims to gain public participation, especially the local communities living near the forest, to establish and revive CCAs to protect the forest and its biodiversity through hand made.

The forests of the Zagros are among areas most severely affected by fires in recent years. Over the last decade, the number of these fires and the area affected have increased significantly. Thus, for a better management of fire prevention and effective firefighting, the project aims for effective measures to prevent and extinguish fires in the villages of Dam Chenar and Grdavah, 10,000 hectares of forest lands in Kabgian, Kohgiluyeh & Boyer-Ahmad Province.

The Persian fallow deer is a prominent mammal in Iran, which is among protected species of the Department of Environment and also listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The population of the species today is semi-captive and limited to the national park and the protected area of Dez and Karkheh in Khuzestan Province, Ashk Island in Lake Urmia and a number of other breeding sites in different provinces.

Overall objective / activities to be implemented under the grant:
Common contagious diseases among domestic animals and wild ungulates as well as illegal hunting in recent years have led to a sharp decline in the population of goats and wild goats, rams, and ewes as the natural prey for Persian leopards in eastern Hormozgan Province. Thus, the rate of attacks on domestic livestock by leopards in the region is increasing significantly. On the other hand, due to the failure to compensate the damages incurred for livestock farmers, killing of the species for the sake of revenge or reducing the attacks has been increasing.

Recourse to highly destructive livelihood methods in Rud Shour, Shirin and Minab International wetland such as fuel smuggling has caused serious damage to the region’s habitats. In some parts of the mangrove forests, a thick layer of oil pollution leakage on the leaves has caused widespread drying of the trees, aerial roots and also the mud around them..

Forests and pastures are among the most important divine blessings, as it plays an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of the region. A factor that can affect the ecosystem of forests and pastures is fire. In recent years, fires, especially the Bahar Mountain fire that occurred in August 2020, have caused irreparable damage to forest and pastures in the region.

In an area of 2300 hectares, Arzhan Wetland is located on the northern part of the Arzhan-Parishan biosphere, 60 kilometers from Shiraz. Due to its geological characteristics, the wetland has always been known as a seasonal wetland throughout history, semi-arid for about 4 to 5 months every year.

As one of the most important aquatic ecosystems in Bushehr Province, the Helleh Wetland has suffered numerous damages caused by human activities in recent years, including over-utilization of the wetland’s water resources, land-use change, intentional fires, excessive forage harvesting, grazing livestock exceeding the ecological capacity of the wetland and last but not least the economic problems after the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the local communities’ pressure on the Wetland.

The forests and pastures of Khuzestan Province in the skirts of the South Zagros have always been subject of human incurred damage and unsustainable harvesting. In recent years, environmental activists in the country have been concerned about improving the situation and protecting Zagros Oak Forests and the need to revive and reduce their exploitation, especially livestock grazing, beekeeping and agriculture has been brought to attention.
