Community-based Conservation of the Traditional Waterfowl Trapping Practice (local Damgah) in the winter Habitats of Migratory Waterbirds, including Siberian Cranes- IRA-G52-2001-002(IRA98G52)

Project location:Fereydunkenar-Mazandaran(Lat/Long:36.645210-52.536621)

The project deals with the traditional waterfowl trapping areas in Fereidoonkenar, Ezbaran and Sorkhrud "Damgahs" at proximity of the town of Fereidoonkenar, Mazandran province located in the Caspian region of Iran. Damgahs are traditionally maintained duck trapping areas. They consist of a complex of agricultural lands surrounded by trees and inundated in winter that are carefully prepared to trap Teal and Mallard.
Incidentally this area has supported Siberian cranes for at least 25 years (since 1977) providing them a safe and rich habitat for wintering while on migration from Siberia every year from October to March. More..

Study of the Persian Gulf Marine Ecology & the Local Community (Corals and Their Relationship with the Indigenous)

The project is a production of two environmental documentaries (26 minutes each) on the Persian Gulf with a focus on the species of coral, the community traditions and their interaction with the coastal areas.
Abie-e-Bidar will visit 14 Iranian islands and communicate with the indigenous. However, some villages will be chosen as case studies and indicators. The shooting will take place in these villages.
The first documentary, Rendez-vous, depicts the perspective of the local community regarding the corals. It also documents the existing species of corals along a 1200 km strip of the northern coastline of the Persian Gulf. More..

Pilot Project for Rehabilitation of Marine Resources of the Persian Gulf in Salakh Region (Qeshm Island)

This is a pilot project in Qeshm Island for the rehabilitation of the natural marine resources through an indigenous method of artificial reefing. Initial studies will be carried out to combine the indigenous and scientific knowledge based on which environment friendly materials will be constructed for artificial reefing. Once the process of artificial reefing is completed the designated area will be secured and guarded by the local fishermen. A management plan for sustainable fishing will be drawn by the locals and fishing cooperatives. The locals will also be engaged in facing threats to the natural resources. The entire process and lessons learned will be filmed and documented in Farsi and English in addition to the educational brochures. SGP Capacity Building for the Network of Environmental NGOs in line with GEF/SGP Goals

The project aimed for the capacity building of NGOs in participatory approaches. This project was initially designed for 7 workshops (4 funded by Department of Environment and 3 by SGP) to provide training for 100 NGO members and equipment for networking. Based on the feedback from the first 3 workshops (funded from the co-funding by Department of Environment, DOE) on the Basics of Participatory Approaches it was decided to expand the project to cover different aspects in Participatory Management, Project Formulation as well as Monitoring and Evaluation in a systematic way. Hence all parties funding the project increased the scope and budget to provide a systematic training to NGO members introduced by the regional networks.
Therefore, the remaining 4 workshops were integrated into 3 series of workshops each 12 to 19 days (total 13 workshops) facilitated by 3 different facilitators to continue with training in Participatory Approaches, Project Formulation, Participatory techniques and Monitoring & Evaluation. More..

Establishment of a Revolving Fund for Training and Propagating the Native Endangered Species of Plants to Combat Desertification in Sistan & Baluchestan (Link To UN Poverty Alleviation Project)

The project is a model of integrating human development activities into environment protection programmes. A number of Dahan Village Community Organizations of Neekshahr Urban District (Sistan Baluchestan Province) will be trained to propagate the endemic endangered species of plants to combat desertification and generate household income. The project will also involve the empowerment of the local community in the planning, implementing, monitoring and reporting of such projects through training and workshops. Part of the project budget ($US 5,800) will be used to establish a revolving credit fund to support other GEF/SGP eligible projects that can be linked with poverty alleviation programmes of the region. The main objective of this project is to develop and implement a sustainable pilot management plan based on the awareness raising and workshops for the local community, local NGOs and local government officials. The coordination and cooperation between the governmental sectors and the local community will be enhanced for the sustainability of the project.
The aim is to develop a successful model to be extended into the immediate Miankaleh Protection Area and possibly upcoming future national and international projects. Also the grantee will lobby for a loan from the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad to the local community. More..

Pilot Project for Monitoring & Rehabilitation of Natural Ecology of Zagros Mountain Through Kinships

This is a pilot project to extract the best practices for the conservation of the biodiversity of Zagros Mountain ecosystem through the remaining traditional socio-economic structures of kinship settlements and their modern institutions. The activities of the project involve social mobilization, seeking alternative livelihoods to decrease the grazing pressure on rangelands, awareness raising and propagation of the endangered species. At the end of the project a workshop will be held in Tehran, Shiraz and on the project site to share the lessons learned. The experiences will be documented and published as a book in Farsi. Topographic factors have created a very diverse microclimate and edaphic conditions in the area. The Zagros Mountain Range extends from Azerbaijan and Kurdestan Provinces to Hormuzgan Province. It is about 900 km long and more than 240 km wide. It consists of numerous parallel ridges, the highest being the east-west crest of 47 peaks of Dena with the altitude of more than 4000km. The aerial length of this crest is more than 80km long. The Garmsar Plain is like a large oasis in the middle of the desert, and it acts as a shield, stopping the desert at the footsteps of Tehran. At the southern margins of the plain there is the Central Desert, which acts as the natural drainage of the Hableh Rood River and its modern irrigation system. This project aims to compile and introduce the traditional forest management as a method for Sustainable Forest Management and modify it according to national and international goals and forest sustainability criteria. Then it will be legally registered as "Modified Traditional Forest Co-Management System" with the High Council of Forest, Rangeland and Soil. To this end the team will survey and categorize the forest stands, compile the local knowledge on traditional forestry, appraise income generating avenues from the Modified Traditional Forest Co-Management System. Onshore Preservation of Hawksbill Turtle Eggs through Community Participation

Shibderaz Village is in the centrally-located southern coastline of Qeshm Island which is currently the only stretch used ?in the entire island by Hawksbill Turtles for nesting and laying eggs. The coastline, therefore, represents an important ?and strategic Hawksbill hotspot. In 2002, the Bureau of Environment, Qeshm Free Zone Area (QFA), received reports ?of Hawksbill Turtles laying eggs near Shieb-deraz Village, Qeshm Island. Immediately the Bureau of Environment of QFA mobilized and deployed the help of the villagers as well as the Village Council to find out that this area is a major ?site. The locals were engaged in collecting and protecting the eggs. In the intervention by Fars Green Center and SGP, “Dena in 2002 and Empowerment of the Local Community” (IRA-G52-2002-012), a total of 39 local youths from 17 villages of the Dena Region received the initial training in eco-tourism. Through its advocacy activities Fars Green Center was able to mobilize funds from the Iran Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) to provide these tour guides with advanced training to obtain official permits in tourism. ICHTO will provide the funds for the venue, educational material and trainers to hold 3 workshops (each 10 days) in Yasouj and SGP will contribute for the travel expenses of the local tour guides. The concept aims to protect and preserve Bustards through community participation in the region of Darab, Fars Province. These birds are caught for the elite to be hunted for sport. Extracting baseline for full grant project - participatory indigenous literature development on natural resources and climatic condictions of Persian Gulf and enhancing local community libraries (Hormoz and Qeshm Islands), Hormozgan Province -Persian Gulf Region

The overall goal of the full grant project is to develop the indigenous literature on the natural resources and the climatic conditions of the Persian Gulf for children and youth as well as enhance the community libraries in Hormuzgan Province (Hormoz and Qeshm Islands) with the participation of the local communities. The project will collect data and samples from the environment. It will also compile the local tales, customs and culture, which will all be used to develop environmental books for children and teenagers. These books will preserve the local folklores from being lost in time and would be a useful tool for awareness raising on the environment and climatic conditions of the islands. Another output of the full grant would be to arrange a local community library, which would also serve as a museum for the environmental data and samples by the active groups of the project.M​​​​​​​ore..​​​​​​​

Planning grant for extracting baseline for project Protection and sustainable usage of the owan lake and surrounding villages

Owan Lake and its beautiful surrounding environment is a major tourism site, however, it is now in danger of misuse of the resources and strains from the tourism flux among other threats such as lack of local custodianship, insufficient inter-departmental coordination, poverty, unemployment, immigration, etc. The overall goal of the full grant project is to create and implement a local co-management for the protection and sustainable use of the Owan Lake which will also ameliorate the issues of the local community of the region. The project will undertake the establishment and empowerment of a local Eco-tourism Cooperative which will implement this plan to provide services to the general public and protect the lake and the surrounding fragile environment from obliteration. It will also conduct training workshops on income generating activities such as medicinal herbs and capacity building for the locals to implementing small scale projects. M​​​​​​​ore..
