COVID-19 Risk Communication- Community Engagement (RCCE) Initiative
The onset of COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 significantly strained many countries’ medical services and disrupted many communities’ access to livelihoods. As of April 2020, the Islamic Republic of Iran was the 8th most affected country by the pandemic in terms of the number of people infected by or lost to COVID-19. The United Nations Country Management Team in Iran quickly convened and developed “The COVID-19 Preparedness & Response Plan (CPRP)” to support national effort to contain the pandemic.
A humanitarian response was planned to enhance countries’ response including Risk Communication- Community Engagement (RCCE) initiative funded by EU-ECHO for the duration of one year. This initiative was led by UNICEF and included projects run by UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNDP and Relief International.
In line with RCCE initiative, UNDP collaborated with The GEF Small Grants Programme with its well-established network of local Non-Governmental Organizations and Community-Based Organizations to reach the most vulnerable community groups in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
The GEF Small Grants Programme through its delivery mechanism and methodology implemented projects with 27 local NGOs and CBOs to develop locally-tailored COVID-19 sensitive communications and community engagement activities to target areas most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. The communication materials promoted greater awareness about the pandemic and about effective measures to respond to it at community and household levels, while contributing to the adoption of new, and potentially life-saving, behavioral practices among vulnerable populations.
