While imposing bans on lumbering and grazing by the locals foresters, age-long lifestyles and living patterns were disrupted, and a number of forest villages were deserted. The remaining families continue to face severe economic hardship. In contrast land conversions, massive industrial Logging Plans and illegal logging have been going unnoticed. The yield of these forests has been reduced from 300 tons/ha. to 100-110 tons/hectare during the last four decades.

Establishment of the Regional Site for Practical Training of Sustainable Management of Waste Cooking Oil for The Production of Biodiesel as a Model in Megacities
Project Number: IRA/SGP/OP5/Y2/STAR/CC/12/04(170)
Project location:
Project background:
Biodiesel is one of the alternative fuels that is produced from renewable resources. Specifically, it is a mono alkyl ester produced from vegetable oil, canola oil, soybean oil or animal fats. Waste animal fats and waste cooking oils (known as “yellow grease”) are also potential feedstocks. Just like petroleum-derived diesel, biodiesel operates in diesel compression engines, including those used in vehicles and stationary electrical generator units. It can be used in a 100 percent pure fuel formulation or as a blended component with petroleum derived diesel. The most common blend is called B20, which is 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel. Essentially, no engine modifications are required, and biodiesel maintains the payload capacity and range of petroleum-derived diesel. Each liter of biodiesel could lead to 3 kg reduction in CO2 emission.

Project location:
Project background:
Despite the fact that this waste feedstock could be efficiently used in the production of a green fuel called biodiesel, hundred thousands of waste cooking oil (WCO) is being disposed of in the municipal sewerage system in Iran every year. Production of Biodiesel fuel from Waste Cooking Oil for Public Transport in Large Cities
Project Number: IRA/SGP/OP5/Y7/CORE/CC/2018/003(194)
Project location:
Tehran – the capital city of the Islamic Republic of Iran – has a daytime population of 13 million people. At night the population drops as people leave for satellite towns. But regardless of time of day, Tehran is still one of the most polluted cities in the world. Based on official statistics, air pollution claims 2,900 to 4000 people’s lives in Tehran only. The main cause of air pollution in the city is reportedly vehicle exhaust fumes. Capacity building and social preservation of Houbara species
Project Number: IRA/SGP/OP5/Y7/CORE/BD/2018(195)
Project location:
Houbara is a unique species that has been categorized as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Unfortunately hunting and smuggling to the countries in the southern part of the Persian Gulf, as well as habitat degradation and exposure to pesticides has contributed to a serious decline of this species. A previously implemented SGP project on Houbara conservation was successful in raising awareness and forming a local group of volunteer rangers and establishing a local micro-credit fund. However, monitoring of project results has shown that the local community still needs support in terms of financial resources to prevent them from hunting and smuggling this valuable species.

(at least 500 installed to date), and then training was provided to key stakeholders (including 600 servicemen and
technicians) in energy saving.
Capacity building and knowledge management for NGOs/CBOs in area of Resilience and Management of Land Degradation
Project Number: IRA/SGP/OP5/Y7/CORE/CB/2018(198)
Project location:
Climate Change and Land Degradation are two of the main threats to the natural resources of I.R. Iran and there is an
urgent need to raise awareness and update the knowledge of NGOs and CBOs who are working in the field of natural

(such as the Convention on Combatting Desertification). Therefore, the project aims to first conduct a national level
survey of NGOs and CBOs which are active in the field of natural resources management and environmental
conservation and assess their knowledge on the mentioned concepts.
Participatory conservation of marine and coastal wetlands in Shur and Shirin rivers of Minab by strengthening livelihoods that are in harmony with nature of Tiab and Kargan villages
Project Number: IRA/SGP/OP5/Y7/CORE/IW/2018(199)

Some of the treats in addition to low water levels are, overfishing, pollution, unplanned and mismanaged development projects, as well as tourism. This project aims to raise awareness and build capacity of the local community in conservation and sustainable use of wetland resources based on their indigenous knowledge and know-how.

For this purpose a National Plan has been prepared to expand the mangrove forests, however this plan lacks a participatory approach. This project aims to work closely with key stakeholders and promote a community-based approach to restoration of mangrove ecosystems.
